Frequently Asked Questions

What services do you offer?

I design for small businesses because I want you to compete with the national brands. I illustrate vector graphics for labels and packages, design custom typography, help engineer complex print jobs, manage your press approvals, and can help you with data analysis.

Custom typography?!?

Absolutely! You created and brought to market the next great consumer product, now give it the identity it deserves by commissioning me to create a font and label that is as unique as your company – one of a kind.

How will this process work?

First, reach out for a free consultation.

Once we discuss your project, I generate a quote. If we go forward, I block off your time and start designing initial concepts for you to review and provide feedback on.

Who will work on this?

I will be the only person working on your project. I will never outsource your work or share your information with anyone. When you need to reach me, I’m here.

I am an independent artist with no firm, keeping your project private.

Why niche in consumer products?

I am combining my printing expertise with my love of design to merge into illustrating print for labels and packaging / consumer packaged goods.

As my career continues, the value of the knowledge I gain from printing gets passed on to you.

Printing and websites too?

At this time I do not print or write code for websites, but I am involved with data analysis, and I do create graphics that meet the technical specifications required for printers and digital developers to apply.

I can follow directives and help determine what will be needed.

Print and web design are different?

Absolutely. It is important to be familiar with printing when designing artwork that is intended to print.

An experienced designer will plan for variables needed for the end use requirements of the graphic.

Have you worked in printing?

I spent a season on press and 15 years working with inks, putting me up close with many different machines and technologies. I couldn’t imagine designing print without having an extensive background producing it.

You can handle press approvals?

Yes. This is specialized work that few designers have an opportunity to learn.

I’ve worked on hundreds of press approvals. I know what should be going on, and how to ensure that your print job is produced correctly.

What size companies do you work with?

I am fortunate to have worked with many of the world’s biggest names.

While much of my experience comes from working with large companies, I offer services to all company sizes. My favorite are the companies that are just getting started!

How do you add value to my brand?

Goal oriented imagery is how designers add value to your brand. Colors, shapes, patterns, negative space; every graphic element has a purpose and communicates something to the observer.

You have an established process?

Yes, principles of visual hierarchy set the rules that are central to design.

Attracting the customer’s attention and intriguing them to learn more are two primary goals of a graphic designer.

How will you apply this to my company?

I learn from you about your company and through the creative process, correlate this information to vector graphics that reflect your identity, defining your brand with purpose.

Can you further explain the design purpose?

A good designer creates effective communication by producing artwork that builds trust and loyalty, while attracting new customers.

Using visually organized ideas, quality visual communication produces meaning in addition to the message.

How long does it take to deliver?

I start designing with a pencil and paper to get ideas out quickly, then I submit them back to you right away. Along the way you will have updates and give feedback so the project reflects your vision. Depending on your needs and my schedule, it could be very quick!

What process is used to print labels?

Large runs manufactured today likely use a process called flexography.

Digital printing is taking market share from flexo, making small and simple runs usually print digitally.

Are you familiar with flexography?

I recieved 3 certifications with the Flexographic Technical Association in 2019.

How does your ink experience help me?

Understanding how ink is applied helps determine what is not only cost effective but physically possible to print. Keeping this knowledge in mind while creating your design saves you time and money down the road, all while supporting a better final outcome.

Do most designers understand printing?

Not always. I’ve contributed ink knowledge to thousands of press runs, and unfortunately some of the problems that occur at the shop can be traced back to the designer. Making the printer’s job easy creates a better final outcome.

What are your prices?

Prices can’t be generated without a consultation. How vast and urgent is your request?

I make a custom quote for every project; labels, package design and press approvals all vary greatly in complexity, cost and time needed to complete.

Do you have an example for a label I can see?

If you look at the Sangria label project, this is what went into it:

8 hours concepting, 20 hours to hand draw font, 16 hours to vectorize, 6 hours to draw the lower font, 2 hours to vectorize it, 16 hours of line work.

Add adjustments / modifications, this took over 70 work hours to complete. Pausing to send progress, get feedback, make changes, evaluate – if this was a real product that had gone through this process, it would stretch the timeline out to over 3 weeks. Most commercial grade labels require this as a minimum time frame.

The end result is a beautiful, fully custom label, that is as unique as the product that it could be on outside my portfolio!

What would you charge for the Sangria label project?

Although this was an example for this website, I used this and other examples, in addition to live jobs, to discover how long it truly takes. Now that I have experience, I would generate a quote for this scale of project for $4,000.

What if I need to revise?

Maybe you want to change the font at the end, that’s a big revision if I spent 40 hours drawing a custom font. Sometimes that happens, and I try to work with you no matter what. I try to get the important things secured early, and am good at narrowing down the direction quickly.

However, the bigger goal is the success of your product. Revisions that don’t change the concept entirely are possible. If you are not happy with the look, I will do everything I can to get you exactly what you expect.

Revisions are free?

I can still offer revisions for free because clients generally know what they are looking for in the beginning. This puts the pressure on me to exceed expectations first, which is my goal.

The better the art is, the more successful we both will be. I’m okay with that dynamic, so I can take this position.

This is a good value?

A great one. I’ve never had to charge for revisions. I don’t double book time slots. I almost always work on only one project at a time. I am available for my clients.

What else is included?

This isn’t just about the graphics, print, branding, and business. All the tangible things you get, plus a great attitude from someone who always puts in an honest day, because helping you grow your business is the reason I started mine.

I absolutely love this job!

Are you ready to help me?

Reach out for a free consultation and I will respond within one business day to schedule it. In the mean-time, grab a pencil and paper to write down any other questions you have or even start drawing your own concept mockup! The more you can tell me about, the better!

I’m a startup and want you to direct the creative process. Can you help?

Now you are speaking my language, this is why I’m here.

Can you take files from our previous designer and continue where she left off?

I don’t work with files from other sources, I only generate original graphics from scratch.

What file type will you deliver when finished?

I send .ai, .svg, and .pdf.

We need extensive branding services, can you help?

I offer brand strategy solutions to achieve specific visual goals using vector illustration, designing label & package print for consumer packaged goods. I try to stay with this specialization because my skillset is a good match for success here.

I need you to attend press approvals. Can you travel?

I can, but this is much more involved and requires advanced notice. It will only be cost effective for you if you have a relatively large scale print campaign.

How do you secure high print quality?

Through my ink career, I’ve been on more press approvals than I can remember.

I’m an expert at evaluating print and recognizing root causes of print defects caused by mechanical and chemical processes.

Can you use a spectrophotometer?

I can use a spectrophotometer. Utilizing me for press approvals can be very beneficial as I can use yours or bring my own.

Large companies could find value by investing in one, and I can teach your employees how to operate one. I can also operate less common equipment to evaluate other print attributes.

Are you ready to help me bring my product into the mainstream?

Absolutely!
